Why WILD?

Protect the Wild has spent years telling stories about what is happening to British wildlife.
Some can be told in a short film. Some need a petition, an investigation or a campaign. Others need more space. That is why we created WILD.
WILD is a quarterly magazine for the longer stories behind the fight for British wildlife. Every edition will bring together investigations, interviews, photography, opinion, campaign analysis and reporting from people working directly on the issues we cover. We want to understand not just what is happening, but why.
Why do some campaigns break through while others struggle? Why do enormous industries affecting wildlife remain largely invisible? What does an undercover investigator actually experience? How does a grassroots campaign become a national issue? What happens after the headlines move on?
WILD also gives us somewhere to examine our own campaigning properly.
Not simply to tell readers what Protect the Wild has done, but to look at what worked, what didn’t and what other campaigners might learn from it. And this cannot just be about us.
We want WILD to give more space to the campaigners, grassroots organisations, investigators, rescues and individuals doing brilliant work for wildlife across Britain. The first editions will inevitably contain more Protect the Wild stories because this is where the magazine is beginning and where its first audience comes from.
But the ambition is much bigger. We want WILD to become a publication people follow in its own right. A home for serious, interesting, beautiful and sometimes uncomfortable stories about British wildlife and the fight to protect it.
Your subscription goes back into the fight.
All profits from WILD go directly back into Protect the Wild’s work. That could mean funding an investigation, supporting a campaign, producing research, creating films or helping us expose something that would otherwise remain hidden.
It creates a simple circle. We do the work. WILD tells the story. Readers support WILD.
That support helps make more of the work possible.
Made with the wild in mind.
If we’re going to produce a physical magazine about protecting wildlife, how it is made matters too. WILD is certified carbon neutral, printed on FSC-certified paper and produced using vegetable oil-based inks.
For now, physical subscriptions are available in the UK only. Alongside the cost of overseas postage, we don’t think it makes sense environmentally to routinely fly individual copies of a British wildlife magazine around the world. Readers outside the UK can still read WILD digitally.
